Case Study for CUPACLAD® Rainscreen Cladding System

The perfect solution for a modern eco-bungalow in Cheshire.

We are proud to be the sole distributors of CUPACLAD® in London. CUPACLAD® is a hybrid between cladding and traditional slate roofing, created to adapt natural slate to new architectural styles and trends, which call for more ecological and sustainable construction.

Architect Jon Moorhouse and his wife purchased the bungalow with aspirations to keep the original eco-friendly design but bring it into the 21st century. Their focus on premium materials ensured seamless integration with the rural landscape and a modern aesthetic.

Jon reached out to the CUPACLAD® team, who later visited his architectural practice to discuss the project. It was soon agreed that the system would be ideal as it could achieve all the aesthetic and sustainability requirements. Fully BBA approved, CUPACLAD® 201 Vanguard – the system eventually specified - is 100% non-combustible, with an A1 fire-rating, and offers a lifespan of over 100 years.

Simon Hope, CUPACLAD® Product Manager, explained why slate was ideal from an environmental perspective: “With our quarries owned and operated by CUPA PIZARRAS, we extract, process, and responsibly manage any excess material, minimising local environmental impact. Although transportation from Spain is necessary, as a carbon neutral company, we offset our emissions, ensuring minimal output”.

Ease of installation was also required. This system uses natural slates and horizontal aluminium rails as the main components of the system. It’s intuitive to install, meaning it can be installed by either a cladding installer or a roofer. Gavin Bailey from Sparta Cladding commented: “Overall, CUPACLAD® is a great product. The support from CUPA PIZARRAS was excellent and we’ve built a good relationship with the team who offered to come to site and demonstrate the best way to install the system. They were also able to supply us with resources that clearly illustrated the installation process and offered detailed design solutions that could be developed into practical site applications”.

Architect and property owner Jon concluded: “I would recommend CUPACLAD®. We found it to be versatile and the installation was very quick – providing us with a beautiful and natural aesthetic as well as good eco credentials’.
